Pleasant Hall Plantation is originally the main residence of a cotton plantation in Christ Church.
Pleasant Hall represents a rare opportunity to purchase a substantial coral stone 18th century Barbadian Great House that has been carefully restored. The South coast property sits in a secure, gated, 2 acre compound with two cottages and a former stables office outbuilding. The site is located in the heart of the popular south coast district of Hastings. The residences/buildings were upgraded and modernized in 2006 . The central and convenient location is near to the PAHO headquarters, the EU Regional Offices and several other major diplomatic embassies, which would make it an ideal prospect for an international business or organization looking to set up offices in the region.
The 16 acre cotton and tobacco estate was passed down through generations of relatives, the Busbys, the Brownes and the Bynoes. A relative, Dr. Benjamin Bynoe, who was born in Barbados, sailed with Darwin on many of his voyages in the 1830’s,and became quite a famous botanist. Pleasant Hall was never a sugar plantation but grew only cotton and tobacco.
A parcel of land at the entrance of the property was sold to a group of gentlemen who started the Wanderers Cricket Club and Dermot Bynoe, a solicitor from Pleasant Hall was the driving force behind this.
In the 1950s the “big house” was converted into two apartments – one upstairs, and one downstairs. The three Miss Bynoes lived downstairs and had an elementary school there, preparing boys for the 8+ exam. Pleasant Hall has withstood many hurricanes, and there were quite a few mahogany trees along the driveway that were uprooted during Hurricane Janet in 1955.
The complex consists of:
- The Great House (currently split into two separate 2 bedroom apartments)
- Carriage House (fully contained 3 bedroom residence)
- Fireside Cottage (spacious one bedroom cottage)
- The Stables (conversion to 4 offices with air conditioning)
The compound sits in an impressive position at the end of a private tree lined cul-de-sac and looks out onto a cricket pitch and pavilion which an owner of the property gifted to the Wanderers Cricket Club in the 1930’s.
The walls are made of solid coral stone with traditional hardwood sash windows. The windows upstairs have further protection from modern external hurricane shutters.
